DOT Europe welcomes the progress made on the European Commission’s Data Union strategy, a cornerstone of the EU’s ambition to build a single market for data. The strategy aims to make more high-quality data available for innovation while preserving the trust and protections that Europeans expect.

For our members, the direction of travel is encouraging: clearer rules on data access and sharing can unlock new services, support research and strengthen Europe’s competitiveness in artificial intelligence and the wider digital economy.

We particularly welcome the emphasis on interoperability and on reducing the fragmentation that has built up across overlapping data rules. A coherent framework gives businesses of every size the legal certainty they need to invest.

At the same time, the strategy must keep safeguards front and centre. Data sharing only works where people and companies trust that their rights, their security and their commercial interests are respected at every step.

A genuine single market for data can be one of Europe’s greatest assets, but only if simplicity and trust are built in from the start.

DOT Europe

DOT Europe and its members stand ready to work with policymakers to turn the Data Union strategy into a framework that is practical, proportionate and genuinely good for Europe’s digital future.
